2017 Friday Learn to Ski and Ride Program

September 2016

Dear Families;

Welcome to Woodstock Ski Runners’ 2016-2017 winter ski season.  We are optimistic that Mother Nature will cooperate this year and deliver us lots of snow! With the addition of a new Quad Chair lift at S6 and increased uphill capacity, the program should run that much smoother!

Even if you are a returning family please take the time to read the following overview as we have made some changes to our program offerings based on parent and instructor feedback.

Registration: Once again we offer online registration for the Friday Program where you can pay by credit card or check. Go to the top of the page and/or click on REGISTER HERE.  Online Registration opens Saturday, October 1, 2016. I have also attached the registration form, health release, scholarship and Bus forms at the bottom of this page.  You can print, scan and email them to office@skirunners.org, or simply fill out and mail to: Woodstock Ski Runners, PO Box 171, South Pomfret, VT 05067. Your child is NOT registered until payment has been received, or a scholarship has been requested.

There are only 15 spots on the online system for beginner snowboard, so as to give folks with no access to a computer a fair shot on getting in. There will be a wait list for beginner snowboarding on the online system in case we get 25 registrants, which is our limit for beginner snowboard.  All snowboarders must be 9 as of 12/31/16

Nordic skiing will no longer be offered as part of the Friday program. Woodstock Ski Runners may offer a one-day “Experience Nordic Skiing” on Saturdays at the Woodstock Nordic Center for ages 9 and up, time TBD. Please contact Gretchen or Chris if you have any questions at woodstocknordic@gmail.com.

I look forward to another great season of fun on the snow. Thank you for your support and participation in Woodstock Ski Runners.

Kind Regards

Chic MacMaster

2017 Friday Learn to Ski/Ride Program

The Friday Program is open to all area children grades 1-6 who want to get outdoors, have fun, make new friends, learn to ski, and if experienced improve their skiing! Sadly, we cannot take kindergartners.

The program runs for eight weeks beginning January 6, 2017. We offer instruction in alpine skiing and snowboarding. These programs are held at Suicide Six Ski Area, and are taught by adult volunteers, trained in weekly clinics, who will emphasize both safety and fun while teaching your child in a friendly, non-competitive environment. Starting at the beginner level, instruction is divided into skill groups. Each week children are progressively taught new techniques and encouraged to develop personal goals.

Due to a lack of volunteer instructors the beginner level snowboard program is limited to the first 25 children (age 9 and up) who register. The online system will allow 15 kids to register so that folks without access to a computer will have a fair shot at getting in. Please contact the office at office@skirunners.org to confirm that your child is in the program.

All snowboarders must be 9 and up as of December 31, 2016.

Cancellations:  Program cancellations are based on the Woodstock Elementary School schedule.  Please listen to the local radio stations for school cancellations.  Occasionally the Friday program will be cancelled due to lack of snow or heavy rain which creates unsafe ski conditions.  In this case, schools and volunteers will be notified.  You can also contact the WSR office at 457-2971 or check our web site www.skirunners.org for updated information.  Please note that we generally do not cancel due to cold weather, so please dress your children appropriately.  In the event of cancellations, there will be no make up days.

Equipment:  Safety First!!

Ski Helmets that fit properly are required for all alpine skiers and snowboarders. If you are unsure whether your helmet fits please go to a local ski shop or to the Ski Shop at Suicide Six.

Equipment in good sound condition is essential to your child’s safety and success in the program.  Alpine equipment requirements include:

  • Ski Helmet
  • Snowboards must have a leash
  • Skis checked and tested by a certified ski shop for safety before program starts.

Please label all equipment with your child’s name.  There are many skis that look alike from the rental shops.  Without your child’s name she/he will not be able to pick out their skis from the others!!

WSR volunteers and staff are not permitted to work on any equipment.

Improperly equipped children will not be allowed to participate due to safety regulations.  Equipment can be purchased or rented for the season at a variety of different locations.  Please take time to review the following options that may fit your family’s needs. Please don’t wait until the last minute to get your child’s equipment!

  • Area ski shops:  Seasonal rentals and junior packages are available at the following shops:  Henderson’s, Quechee, VT (802) 295-1973, Omer and Bob’s, Lebanon, NH (603) 448-3522.
  •  Alpine/Snowboard Rentals: A limited number of seasonal rentals are available at the Suicide Six Ski Shop, so make sure to call early.  Please contact Suicide Six (802) 457-6661. Fittings for rentals must be done by Monday, December 19, 2016.
Scholarships:  There are a limited number of equipment scholarships available.   The Form is on the forms page.

Skiers Code of Conduct:   Please carefully review these important rules with your children:

  •  Participants MUST ski with their designated group and remain with an instructor at all times. Parents and relatives are not permitted to ski with their child’s group UNLESS they have properly registered through Woodstock Ski Runners as an official instructor.
  •  Dangerous skiing, use of profanities, disrespectful behavior toward other skiers, instructors or WSR and Suicide Six staff and are all causes for dismissal from the program.
